Overview Fordham University: Office of the Provost: Arts & Sciences: English Location: Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Campus Open Date: Aug 02, 2023 Salary Range or Pay Grade: $8798 per course Description The English Department of Fordham University accepts applications for part-time Non-Tenure Track (NTT) faculty to teach in its first-year Writing & Composition Program on a rolling basis. Based on scheduling needs as well as qualifications and availability, successful candidates may be offered up to two sections of Composition II, a required Core course that focuses on rhetorical inquiry and research-based writing; or Composition I, which helps students build comfort with college-level writing through attention to writing process, rhetorical reading, and critical language awareness. At Fordham, we view writing as an essential foundation of students’ first-year experience and the undergraduate education more broadly. Our Composition courses aim to introduce diverse forms, purposes, and genres of writing that will help students understand the power of rhetoric and develop their abilities to communicate for a range of academic, professional, and public purposes. Composition courses are generally capped at 16 to support the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, care for the whole person. We seek instructors who are familiar with current, research-based best practices in college writing pedagogy, especially inclusive and antiracist approaches, and who can apply them to foster engaging, equitable teaching and learning environments in concert with Fordham’s Jesuit mission and its strategic plan to educate for racial justice. We strongly encourage candidates to center their writing teaching experience, philosophy, and practice in application materials. Part-time NTT instructors at Fordham are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and certain terms of employment, including minimum per course rates, are set by the Adjunct Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. The per-course rate for new instructors as of August 1st, 2023 is $7,950 . Part-time NTT faculty may teach a maximum of two courses per semester at either or both of Fordham's two main campuses at Rose Hill (Bronx) and Lincoln Center (Manhattan), based on department need. Note: Rose Hill has the larger student body, and staffing needs are often concentrated there. Candidates are welcome to specify campus preference in their application materials, while noting that priority may be given to those who prioritize Rose Hill or are open to teaching at either campus. On occasion, the English Department hires part-time NTT faculty to teach Texts and Contexts, a Core course in introduction in literary studies and analysis, or more rarely Advanced Literature Core electives. Qualifications A Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in hand is required for new hires at Fordham. A minimum of one year experience teaching first-year writing courses at the college or university level.
