Glencore is one of the world's largest diversified natural resources companies and a leading producer and marketer of more than 60 products that make everyday life possible. Through a network of assets, customers and suppliers that spans the globe, we produce, process, recycle, source, market and distribute the raw materials that enable decarbonization, while meeting today's energy needs. With around 140,000 employees and contractors and a strong presence in more than 35 countries, both in established and emerging regions in terms of natural resources, our industrial and marketing activities are supported by a global network of more than 40 offices.

Purpose and Objective

The Environmental Chief will lead environmental management for two of Glencore's key mining projects in Argentina — El Pachón in San Juan and MARA in Catamarca — with a primary focus on water resources. El Pachón is a copper and molybdenum development near the Chilean border, while MARA integrates the Agua Rica deposit with Minera Alumbrera's infrastructure to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

The role ensures compliance with Argentine regulations and corporate standards, drives sustainable practices, and builds strong relationships with authorities, communities, and stakeholders to safeguard the company's license to operate.

  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage audits, and engage with regulatory entities and local communities.
  • Proficiency in environmental monitoring tools and data management platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to represent the company before internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced English and Spanish, both oral and written.

Responsabilities

  • Environmental Strategy and Water Management Planning: Lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of environmental strategies with a strong focus on water resources (usage, recycling, discharge, treatment), ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability goals and local regulations.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Auditing: Ensure full compliance with Argentine environmental and water regulations, permits, corporate policies, and international standards. Lead internal and external audits, implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Environmental Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct environmental impact and risk assessments, focusing on water-related aspects, and developing mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Monitoring, Reporting, and Data Management: Oversee the development of environmental monitoring systems and dashboards for water quality, consumption, and discharge. Ensure accurate, timely, and transparent reporting to senior management, stakeholders, and authorities.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Community Relations: Maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies, local communities, and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with water related environmental commitments and fostering trust.

  • Lead studies and analysis in surface hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, water balances, and hydrogeochemical modeling.
  • Evaluate and interpret geophysical and geoelectrical results applied to groundwater.

-Design and coordinate surface- and groundwater-monitoring plans; establish performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Assess water-related risks and develop preventive and corrective measures.
  • Prepare and validate water management and compensation plans in line with the mitigation hierarchy.
  • Advise Engineering, Planning, and Operations on water aspects throughout design and execution phases.
  • Support the permitting strategy for all water-related matters and provide technical expertise on HSE licensing and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure document traceability and regulatory compliance with provincial legislation (San Juan and Catamarca).
  • Ensure alignment with international standards (IFC, Equator Principles, ICMM, etc.) in water management.
  • Participate in environmental audits, impact study reviews, and preparation of technical reports.
  • Analyze water-related performance and benchmarks, track industry trends, and identify improvement opportunities.

Behavioral Competencies

  • Effective communication: conveys technical results to diverse audiences (internal/external, technical/non-technical).
  • Autonomy and proactivity: provides technical leadership and anticipates water-related issues.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration: works seamlessly with Engineering, Environment, Operations, and Communities teams.
  • Results orientation upholds technical quality and meets agreed schedules.
  • Adaptability: responds effectively to changing project requirements and external conditions.
  • Professional ethics and environmental commitment: acts with integrity and respect for environmental values.
