Job Summary
Under the general supervision of a Sergeant, an Officer focuses on public safety by protecting life, property and the state transportation infrastructure, by providing safe and efficient movement of commercial traffic through the State of Arizona; enforces all state and federal laws and regulations relative to commercial vehicle enforcement and regulatory compliance; completes all work assignments and training in a timely manner, good decision making, makes arrests when necessary, professionalism, testifies in court when required, prepares clear and concise written reports, exercises judgment in determining use of force, and promotes compliance of all state and federal laws, rules and regulations directly related to the duties of the position.

Individuals who have served honorably as a peace officer in Arizona and their certification as a peace officer has lapsed, or served in another state or federal agency, may be eligible to gain Arizona POST certification through Waiver Testing in lieu of attending an Arizona Peace Officer basic course at an academy.

Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) is required.

Background check and in and out of state travel is required.

Job Duties
Screen commercial driver/vehicle credentials, weigh commercial vehicles, perform enhanced vehicle identity inspections, registration compliance, commercial vehicle safety inspections.

Conduct traffic stops on commercial vehicles and enforce all pertinent laws, rules and regulations.

Issue applicable permits, route over-dimensional loads and collect appropriate fees and taxes.

Inspect vehicles, dealer and salvage yard operations for compliance with State title and registration requirements.

Take appropriate enforcement action as authorized by state and federal motor vehicle and operator laws, rules and regulations.

Knowledge Of

Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations.

Modern law enforcement methods, best practices and procedures.

Search and Seizure, rules of evidence and custody of prisoners.

Defensive tactics.

First Aid, CPR.

Court systems, procedures and protocols.

Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system.

Principles of report writing.

Have previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona, another state, or federal agency, and meet all of the minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer.

Skilled In

Interpreting relevant State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations.

Eliciting factual information and drawing valid conclusions.

Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff members and the general public.

Use and care of firearms.

Operate police equipment in emergency situations.

Exercise discretion in use of force.

Verbal and written communication, writing clear and concise reports.

Problem solving and using good judgment.

Have completed the basic and advanced training that demonstrates substantial comparability to the Arizona basic course.

Obtain and maintain a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) certification.

Maintain required firearms certification.

Understand and interpret laws and regulations.

Obtain an appointment from an Arizona Law Enforcement Agency.

Selective Preference(s)

Knowledge of Motor Vehicle Laws, rules and regulations; computer skills, report writing and basic money handling experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certification.

Weapons certified in accordance with AZ P.O.S.T. standards, Arizona Post Firearms Certification.

Valid Driver's License.

Must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks.

Maintain acceptable driving records and complete all required driver training.

Maintain required liability insurance for personally owned vehicles on state business.

All newly hired State employees subject to and must successfully complete the E-Verify program.
