Assistant Cook EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER/VETERANS/DISABLED SUMMARY Non-supervisory, USCG credentialed Assistant Cook, tasked with food preparation and sanitation under the direction of the Chief Cook. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The position requires an Ordinary Seaman MMC. Assists with food preparation as directed by Chief Cook. Maintains food standards as set by company. Helps maintain sanitary culinary environment in cooperation with chief cook. Assists in inventory and inspection of groceries and galley cleaning supplies. Responsible for dinner preparation/service and joint preparation of lunch/service with chief cook. Shares responsibility of stocking and cleaning of drink cooler and cleaning of all kitchen equipment. With Chief cook, keeps the galley, messes, serving line, coffee area, reefer room, dry stores, laundry, and linen locker in a clean and sanitary condition at all times. Assists in keeping an inventory of clean linens as directed by the Chief cook. Tours are 28 days on, with 2 paid travel days and 26 days off. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Language Ability: ability to effectively communicate and respond to questions from manager and internal team. Reasoning Ability: ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Physical Presence: Regular and predictable physical presence on the ship is an essential qualification for this position due to the importance of the team-related aspects of the essential duties, the aggressive timeframes under which the employee will operate, and the need for face‑to‑face interaction with manager and crew. Ability to travel for 28‑day tours, with 2 paid travel days. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently inspect the galley, laundry, mess, reefer room and storage holds and may be exposed to ongoing ship states and various weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment may range from quiet to moderate. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, and to talk or hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. The employee is required to climb a pilot ladder for crew change purposes. The employee is required to carry average size bags of household garbage up 2 floors on a regular basis.
