The MS Science Lab Assistant is responsible for supporting the smooth operation and delivery of the curriculum in the Middle School Science Department. Working collaboratively with science staff, the Lab Assistant ensures that classes are provided with necessary equipment and materials, maintains laboratories and preparation/storage areas in a hazard-free and tidy manner, and supports student learning and classroom activities.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Preparation & Safety
• Study, set up, test, and supervise various laboratory activities and experiments.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), hazardous chemical regulations, and risk assessment procedures.
• Ensure laboratories, preparation areas, and storage rooms are clean, organized, and free of safety hazards. Inventory & Supply Management
• Manage inventory of laboratory equipment, materials, and chemicals.
• Ensure necessary supplies are present for all planned science activities.
• Review catalogs, order supplies for teachers, complete order forms, and properly organize, store, and dispose of materials. Instructional & Teacher Support
• Support student learning during classroom and laboratory sessions in collaboration with science teachers.
• Provide administrative and practical support to teachers (e.g., photocopying, preparing supplies)
• Provide coverage for classroom teachers during brief absences when required. Technology Integration & Maintenance
• Update and install necessary technological equipment, hardware, and software for science classes.
• Maintain equipment inventory and manage digital book versions and technology resources in classrooms. Education
• Undergraduate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent qualification in Science, Laboratory Technology, Education, or a related field. Languages
• Fluency in both English and Spanish.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in both languages. Experience
• Prior experience working in a school science laboratory.
• Experience managing laboratory equipment, chemicals, and safety protocols.
• Experience supporting student learning and collaborating with instructional staff. Work Schedule
• To be agreed with MS Principal (60% of working week, potential to make up to 100% schedule).
