Purpose

 Manage all the current and future study projects for the Cerro Negro site. Experience in investment systems is required.

Identify, advance, and deliver studies on projects at Cerro Negro that will create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining, including the termination of studies deemed to be uneconomic or of an unacceptable business risk.

Safely and responsibly execute high-quality project studies in line with established governance processes, study management standards and guidelines to ensure the most robust and highest value business cases are advanced to make informed management decisions in relation to the scoping (Stage 1), pre-feasibility (Stage 2A), and feasibility (Stage 2B) phases of the project life cycle.

Essential Duties

Study Identification, Strategy Planning and Role Determination
. Contribute to development of scenarios for the annual scenario planning exercise in conjunction with Exploration, Long-term Planning (LTP), and Strategic Resource Development (SRD) and determine which scenario layers require .
. Participate in quarterly Exploration/LTP/Projects coordination meetings to identify new studies or studies passing from Exploration to Studies.
. Participate in quarterly Studies/LTP/Site Projects coordination meetings to identify new studies.
. Participate in site budget and LTP meetings to identify sustaining capital projects which require study support.
. Develop multi-stage study schedules and advancement strategies for identified projects and recommend Investment Leader and Investment Manager in conjunction with Regional Study Director.

Esential Duties

Investment Manager
.    Be the Investment Manager on assigned studies.
.    Act as the primary point of contact for the assigned studies.
.    Lead integrated planning workshops and build study schedules.
.    Assemble and manage multi-discipline teams including representation from geology, mine engineering, process, project controls, financial modelling, materials and contracts, HSLP, environmental, social responsibility, owners team representation, etc.
.    Monitor all work in progress to ensure that quality and technical standards are in compliance with Newmont and Investment System standards and policies.
.    Monitor all work to ensure that business cases are reliable and achievable and that studies are performed with a high level of quality and innovation.
.    Manage and ensures completion of all Newmont Investment System requirements for Stage Gate deliverables, peer reviews, application of opportunity and risk assessment practices, and use of Value Improving practices.
.    Write, compile, and/or edit gate reports and project execution plans
.    Assures all Newmont Technical Standards are understood by team members and applied appropriately.
.    Ensure that quality and engineering standards are met and that designs evolve through the stage gate process in alignment as decisions are made or new information becomes available; approves changes to designs or schedules as necessary.
.    Employ a strategic planning process that focuses on a full range of options, in a systematic approach that translates opportunities into robust and sustainable solutions that create value.
.    Investigate, identify and act upon opportunities or risks associated with the project including all related financial, technical, social/community, and governmental/permitting aspects.
.    Develop and assist in the delivery of an effective community engagement and permitting strategy for the study that is aligned with the regional and site strategy.
.    Review, evaluate and approve contracts for work to be performed by consultants or contractors; monitor budgets, approve plans and designs and resolve problems as they arise.
.    Provide leadership and technical direction in the resolution of problems associated with the study work. 
.    Develop and facilitate productive team relationships with diverse team members.
.    Compile and distribute weekly and monthly study reports as required by site and regional leadership.
.   Interface with site projects and/or operations teams before, during and after handover of studies at Gate 2B or Gate 3 to assure a smooth transition.

.   Demonstrate proactive and visible leadership in achieving a culture of health and safety including maintaining a high focus on safety and actively promoting Newmont’s safety standards while on the job and through safety by design.
.    Maintain proactive and effective communication with all key site, regional, and corporate stakeholders on studies being managed.
.    Participate in monthly regional study dashboard review meetings to communicate study progress to key stakeholders.
.    Assure study and project costs and physicals are properly reflected in business plans, budgets and forecasts.
.    Define annual reserve and resource targets in the region with Exploration and LTP and ensure work plans are developed to achieve targets.
.    Coordinate alignment of schedules and deliverables associated between any execution work completed by projects and study work if Early Works execution occurs during Stages 1 to 2B.
.    Adhere to Newmont’s Values in the execution of the Study Manager role

Training & Experience

 

Knowledge: 


.    Bachelor’s degree in mining, geology, metallurgy or related science/ engineering technical discipline is required.

Experience: 


.    A minimum of 8 years of experience in the mining industry in operations and projects, with at least 2 years of exposure to project or study work. 

Skills and Abilities: 


.    Ability and desire to understand and synthesize diverse types of information from functions including geology, metallurgy/process, mine engineering, infrastructure engineering, hydrogeology/hydrology, geostatistical modeling, operations, projects, information technology, tax, treasury, financials, environmental, social, political, land, legal, human resources, supply chain, security, and overall project management on one or more complex evaluations at one time.  
.    Bi-lingual fluency in English and Spanish is required.
.    Proven ability to work within and understand other cultures, including language skills, and manage multi-cultural teams.
.    Ability to think out of the box, drive innovation, and hold cross functional teams accountable for results and recommendations that drive critical site decisions.
.    Ability to communicate complex information in varying forms (verbal, presentation, report) to audiences ranging from technical team members to executive leadership.
.    Proven ability to justify, budget, execute and manage large complex studies with varying financial drivers, varying project risks and project costs up to $100M.
.    Proven ability to work with contracted technical experts, site, regional and corporate technical staff in a dynamic global environment.
.    Ability to show initiative, engage with and independently direct multiple technical teams, and handle uncertainty while knowing when to escalate key issues or decision points and seek feedback from appropriate stakeholders.
.    Thorough understanding of discounted cash flow analysis and the correlation between all physical and cost inputs to a project’s financial metrics.
.    Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and drive change within business unit.
.   Key competencies are: leadership, business acumen, risk management, strategic planning, problem solving, scheduling and budgeting, attention to detail, information management, and work prioritization.

Working Conditions

.    The role is remote based with regular visits to the site.  Remote work will entail significant time in virtual meetings with team members or other key stakeholders.
